First published in the early 1990s, Juniper has the hallmarks of many childrens fantasy novels published around that time - there is a distinct good matched against a distinct evil, a straightforward plot with few detours, a certain clarity of focus leading to a conclusion that many readers of more recent fantasy may see as predictable. Under Juniper's kind but stern tutelage, Wise Child thrives, learning herb lore, reading and basic survival in those difficult times. Orphaned by the death of her grandmother and her sailor-father's disappearance, Wise Child chooses to become the ward of Juniper, the village wisewoman who is healer, midwife and witch. In this exciting, well-written fantasy, the setting (Britain in the Dark Ages) is as much a character as Wise Child and her guardian Juniper. ![]() ![]() Shepard, who lovingly gave Pooh and his companions shape. The group of America fan girls for example? I still don't really know why they're here except to show that America is inspiring youths. I felt like it was getting bogged down by short side plots that never really seemed to go anywhere. I adore America as a character but where this book loses me is that it doesn't really feel like a cohesive comic. So, essentially she was a blank slate with this book. America was not given a ton of backstory, is what I'm getting at. We know that she's a Latina but we didn't know what community her mothers would've been a part of. We know that she'd been on her won for quite some time ever since. We knew that she lost her moms when they sent her away because their home planet was too dangerous. Here's the thing, America was sorely lacking in a lot of details about her backstory. ![]() I just feel like Young Avengers was also geared towards a 15-22 crowd and I totally got what that book was about. I get that I might be a little too old for the demographic this book is attempting to appeal to and that's okay. It's a little too tumblr esque for my tastes.
